Modified sleeping habits

Modified sleeping habits to reduce back pain

  • Lying down is considered to be the most comfortable position by most of us as this position relieves most of the pressure from our spine.
  • It is not always necessary to lie flat on back there are many other positions the one can try out and choose any that suits best.
  • Lying on the front increases the lordotic curve in your lower back, which causes an increase in backache due to facet joint problems. However, in conditions like herniated disc, such positions probably do not cause pain.
  • If you are suffering from back pain these are the positions which will help you to relieve your back pain to a great extent.

  • Lying flat on the back with legs straight may also increase the curve in the lower back and cause backache. The Fowler position helps to flatten this excessive curve and helps in relaxation of the psoas muscles (major and minor), which run from the lower back to thighs.
  • In acute back pain, several pillows under the knees can be placed to relieve back pain, but a rolled-up towel may be enough for most of other conditions
  • An adjustable bed can also be used to relieve limb pain by raising or lowering head and limb position. Also a semi-recumbent position in an adjustable bed  is considered helpful in breathing or cardiac conditions.
